HISTORY

The Pekingese's story is one of opulence and exclusivity, rooted in the ancient imperial courts of China. Esteemed as symbols of luck and guardians against spirits, they were companions to royalty, leading lives of unimaginable luxury. Their journey to the Western world began in the mid-19th century, when during the looting of the Summer Palace in Beijing five Pekese were discovered hiding behind a drapery. The dogs were returned to England as a gift for a delighted Queen Victoria, and the breed quickly caught on. The first Pekingeses arrived in America in about the 1890s. They made history when a Pekingese was one of only three dogs to survive the sinking of the Titanic.
