Life Span: 9 - 14 years
Colours: Brindle, white, blue, black, lilac, chocolate, tan, and seal (with variations ranging from a two-color coat to a tri-color coat).
HISTORY
Bulldogs were created for the English sport of bullbaiting beginning in 1100. By the middle of the 1800's, the sport was no longer legal, and bulldogs quickly began to disappear. The bulldog was revived solely for the conformation venue, thus selective breeding for appearance severely compromised the health and lifespan of this once agile, athletic, and happy breed. A breeding project began in 1971 using a linebreeding scheme developed by Dr. Fechheimer of Ohio State and directed by David Leavitt to successfully breed a healthier and even-tempered version of the original bulldog with fewer health problems. The goal of this project was to return the bulldog to the appearance of the Regency-Period bulldog, now named the Olde English Bulldogge (OEB), to clearly differentiate the new breed from the modern English Bulldog.
The foundation of most of today’s Old English Bulldogs, also known as Olde English Bulldogges, can be traced back to English Bulldogs, American Bulldogs, American Pitbull Terriers, and Mastiffs.
