HISTORY

The Lagotto Romagnolo (also known as the Italian Water Dog) is a breed steeped in history, originating from the marshlands and lagoons of Italy’s Romagna region. Lagotto means 'duck dog' and 'Romagnolo' for the Romagna area. This dog was originally bred for retrieving game from water, its dense, curly coat providing protection against the cold and wet conditions. However, with the draining of marshes in the 19th century, the Lagotto Romagnolo's role shifted to that of a truffle hunter, leveraging its keen nose to excel in this new role. This transition from waterfowl retriever to expert truffler has defined the modern Lagotto, a dog prized for its olfactory skills and adaptable nature for centuries
